Starbucks in Japan

As some of you will know, I’m a bit addicted to Starbucks (or スタバ as they call it here in Japan). But how different is Starbucks in Japan compared to Starbucks in the UK?

Not very different to be honest!

The main difference I’ve noticed is the occasional unusual flavor. One famous example of this would be the Matcha Frappuccino (抹茶クリームフラペチーノ)-a creamy green milkshake-like drink which I became totally hooked on when I first came to Japan.

Recently Coffee Jelly Frappuccino has become my poison! I don’t know if this is available anywhere else in the world but it strikes me as a distinctly Japanese flavor.

I’d like to hear from other Starbucks fans out there! What’s your favorite drink? What flavors are unique to your country? Why do you like Starbucks?

I love to travel and experience new things but, I have to confess, I’m always very happy to find a Starbucks when I’m travelling. It’s like a home away from home!

Happy coffee drinking everyone!

  1. Oh I am a huge huge huge starbucks fan. I love it and since I am pregnant and have to limit my caffine intake (I allow myself up to one cup of coffee a day) but If I am out and see a starbucks that will always be where I go.

    If I am having a hot coffee then it is usually a white chocolate mocha. If I am having an iced coffee then it usually just the latte or a frappacino!

    When I was trying to get pregnant though I gave up coffee altogether and for most of my first trimester- I missed it so. I went from 5 cups a day to nothing.

  2. Never heard of Coffee Jelly Frappuccino – wonder how long they’ll keep that one going?
    Wish they did the Matcha Frappuccino here – it’s so nice. I think I saw that Eat had started making them – must try it to see how it compares ;-}

  3. It is also virtually identical to Starbucks in America. I visit a small town in Tochigi often but they don’t have a Starbucks. My mother-in-law there also loves Starbucks and we drive about 45 minutes to a mall in Utsunomiya to enjoy Starbucks there.

  4. I feel very lucky to work in the same building as the starbucks in my town. At the moment, I am loving soy chai lattes… but I think my ultimate fave is the strawberry and cream frappucino.

  5. Second the white chocolate mocha. :) It has to be that or the cinnamon dulce latte – though cinnamon vanilla is also nice.

    I could swear, though, that some years ago in Chicago I had a Coconut Creme (frappuccino?) – no coffee in it, just frozen coconutty deliciousness. Haven’t seen it since.
