Taiyaki – the talk of the town!

Today was Taiyaki day!  No, it’s not another holiday or gorowase-created day like Natto Day.  Today was the day a new ‘taiyaki‘ (鯛焼き) shop opened in my neighborhood!

Taiyaki is a kind of Japanese cake, which is fish-shaped.  It’s very cute and absolutely delicious!  They are made with a sort of pancake batter, and come with a range of different fillings, the most common being red bean paste made from azuki beans.  We were particularly excited about this shop because they also sell white taiyaki (’shiro taiyaki’), which are less common than the regular brown ones.  White taiyaki also have a range of fillings, but the pancake batter is made out of tapioca powder (I think), which gives it a much stretchier, mochi-mochi texture.  Yum!

I don’t have a picture of the white taiyaki right now, but I’m sure I will buy some soon and then I’ll post ‘Taiyaki part 2!’.

All day, from the time I got to school until we closed, there was a long line of people waiting outside the taiyaki shop!  Here’s a photo I took from my classroom window during my break:

We all really wanted to try them, but I watched the line all through my lunch break and it just wasn’t moving fast enough to get down there and back.

Well… fortunately, someone else was able to go down there and get a whole bunch for us!!  (ありがとう!)  So after work we had a quick taiyaki feast! They were delicious!  おいしかった!

Watch this space – I’m sure there will be more taiyaki action coming up in the near future! ;)
